Ep 62: Mythbusting Ai with Tyler Greenfield
August 3rd, 2025
Coming soon!
Thom has been busy hobnobbing with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, and bringing his charming, well- dressed chameleon abilities to the ground breaking ceremony for a brand new Te Papa Biodiversity Center. You may have seen him there, or not as he was blending into the crowd wearing a rather stylish coat.
Thom and friend of the show Andrew Stewart contemplating the role of jars in a science career, to open or not to open....
Self-confessed chamaeleon Thom blending in perfectly while speaking with the Prime Minister of New Zealand.
“The way in which you minister is PRIME” - Alan
In the News this month: Alan and Thom discuss a meeting in Perth to assess the red list status of deep-sea species, and just how vulnerable they are. Some of the hadal snailfish are on the list- now officially described by Thom as being “precious babies that must be protected at all costs.”
Custom milled keels for a bespoke hand made USV.
Critter photos from a ghost diving trip.
Debates over the necessity of jars in legitimizing a science career.
Baby Dumbo paper and adorable baby photos shared by Kat.
Deep-sea Lino cut prints happening on canvas.
Ceramic hagfish sculptures and blown glass mermaids purses complete with kelp.
NotOurDog made an appearance, and much talk about Oreo cafes and CAKE!
In a followup to one of our favorite episodes, Ep 10 Here be Monsters, we bring Tyler Greenfield back for another fascinating episode, this time about Mythbusting in the age of Artificial Intelligence. Our feeds have been filled with images of mermaids, bizarre creatures supposedly from the depths and even strange barnacle washing videos, so we ask Tyler to bring his expertise to weigh in on the prevalence and problems with AI images.
Tyler Greenfield is a paleontologist and cryptozoologist who’s blog - Incertae Sedis reveals the truth behind some cryptozoological stories and paleontological mistakes. Since episode 10 Tyler has finished his bachelor’s, written a good few papers, appeared on other podcasts (none as good as his debut of course) and is almost done with his masters and on the lookout for a PhD. He was even a credited consultant on the new (2025) Walking with Dinosaurs
Megalodon teeth dredged up by the HMS Challenger, which are famous in cryptozoology for being (erroneously) dated to only ~24,000-11,000 years ago. These photos were published in Tyler's 2023 paper on the subject and were released under a Creative Commons license.
Leave us a voice message on the Answer phone!
We had a lovely answer phone message from friend of the show Johanna Weston, she was present on the Falkor Too for the iconic exploration of the Mar Del Plata Canyon off the coast of Argentina. This dive made history with over 17.5 million divestream views!

The BBC posted a clip of Spinosaurus hunting Onchopristis from "Walking with Dinosaurs" on YouTube, which anyone should be able to watch. The entire episode should be available for free on the BBC website for anyone in the UK and on the PBS website for anyone in the USA.
